Buying Things That Look Like Pin Up Clothes
The retro look from the 1950s will always be in style. It is, arguably, one of the best fashion decades and is the origin of a large percentage of pin up photos. Pin up clothes are often imitated today and even more often are gotten wrong. Many modern clothes can still fit that image with just a few carefully selected accessories. However, many women do too much and end up looking like they are wearing a costume, or they could wear too little and not look lady-like anymore.
When going for the clothes themselves, choose things that are modern with just a bit of retro flair. You can dress it up or down, depending on your mood. If you go too over the top or too sexy, no one will take you seriously. A few accessories and a more neutral outfit go a long way.
The color palette is very simple, which makes things easier for you. Black and white, navy, and red are the most usual colors for pin up clothes. They are simple and well-fitted to the body in order to let the woman wearing the clothes really stand out. It is about the silhouette, not about how busy the clothes can be. The most exciting thing these clothes should have is silk or a little bit of lace.
The thing about pin-ups is that they were attractive and sensual, not overly-exposed. You should feel comfortable wearing the outfit in front of your boyfriend's mother while at the same time knowing that he thinks you look really nice. Skirts should never go above or below the knee. If it hits anywhere on your kneecap while you are standing, it is a good length. Structured pencil skirts are incredibly sexy while still being modest and professional.
Sweaters, especially button-up sweaters, should be well fitted to your torso without being too tight. They should end at your natural waist, as long as you will never show any bare stomach. You should wear little jewelry–perhaps just some pearls or earrings with your pin up clothes.
Dresses are where you can have a lot of fun. If they are A-line dresses and float away from the hips, you can look every inch the little lady. By having them still end at the knee, and by having the top still be very form-fitting, you can be provocative and modest at the same time. Put a wide belt at the smallest part of your waist, especially with dresses like these.
Accessories are key for this look. Wear heels (to your comfort level) whenever you can. It changes your posture and can give you the confidence and attitude of a pin up. Wear sexy lingerie. It can be a nice surprise for someone, or it can be for you alone. It is once again a confidence booster and can make you feel very pretty. Wear nylons. Too few women do that any more and it is a nice touch. You can get fun, retro nylons with lines up the back at just about any lingerie store. You can also get garter belts and thigh-high nylons, too. The slight outline of the garters may be noticed under a tight skirt, which is a very mysterious touch.
Scarves can be tied around your neck and a little light red lipstick can be worn. Wear gloves, since it is a glamorous, unnecessary, lady-like thing to do. It can up the 'fanciness' of your outfit. Think of Betty Grable's bathing suit pin up picture. Why was that one famous? Because she was pretty and happy, not pouty and intense. She did not look like a loose woman, but rather showed only her legs.
